Connect WordPress
SiteSeed sends each article to your WordPress as a post, with its cover image and tags. It goes live or waits as a draft, as you choose in step 4. You need your site address, your WordPress username and an application password.
Before you start
- Your site opens with
https://. SiteSeed only connects over https. - You can log in to WordPress with a user who can publish posts, such as an Administrator or an Editor.
- Your WordPress is version 5.6 or newer. Application passwords came with 5.6.
1. Make an application password in WordPress
- Log in to your WordPress admin. Go to Users, then Profile.
- Scroll down to Application Passwords. Type a name you will recognise, like
SiteSeed, and add it. - WordPress shows the new password once. Copy it now. The spaces in it are fine.
An application password is not your login password. You can delete it in the same place at any time, and SiteSeed then stops reaching your site.
2. Connect it in SiteSeed
- In SiteSeed, open your site, then the Your website tab. Under How do we reach your site?, pick WordPress.
- Turn on Publish to WordPress.
- WordPress site URL: your site’s address, like
https://your-wordpress-site.com. Use the address your site really opens at, with or withoutwww. - Username: the username you log in to WordPress with. Not the name you gave the application password.
- Application password: the password from step 1.
- Press Connect WordPress.
3. Test the connection
Press Test connection. SiteSeed logs in to your WordPress with what you saved and reads your user. It does not create or change any post. Green with Connected as your-username means it works.
The test always uses what is saved. If you changed a field, press Save WordPress connection first.
4. Choose what happens to new articles
Under the connection, When an article is written has three choices. You can change it at any time. It applies from the next article on.
- Publish every article (the default): Articles go live automatically as soon as they are written and fact-checked. No approval needed.
- Keep as a draft in SiteSeed: A new article goes live only when you read it and press Publish.
- Send as a draft to my website: The article lands in WordPress as a draft. Publish it there, or here.
Articles written before you connected the site stay as drafts in SiteSeed. When the site is connected and set to Publish every article, the Your website tab offers one button to publish them.
If it doesn't work
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| WordPress refused the username or the application password. | Check Username is your login name, not the application password’s name. Make a new application password and paste it again. If your site moves visitors to another address (for example from example.com to www.example.com), enter that final address. |
| WordPress site URL must use https:// | Enter the address with https://. If your site has no SSL certificate yet, add one with your host first. |
| This address answered, but not like WordPress. | Enter your site’s home address, such as https://example.com, not a page inside it. Open https://your-site/wp-json/ in a private browser window: it should show text that starts with {"name". If it shows a login page or a block page instead, a security plugin or firewall is blocking the WordPress REST API. Allow it, then test again. |
| Network error | SiteSeed could not reach any server at that address, or it did not answer within 30 seconds. Check the address opens in a private browser window and that your host is up, then test again. |
| WordPress request failed | WordPress refused the request. A security plugin may block the REST API or application passwords. Allow them, then test again. |
| No Application Passwords section on your profile | Your WordPress is older than 5.6, or a security plugin or your host turned application passwords off. Update WordPress or turn them back on. |
| An article shows WordPress: pending | Your WordPress user cannot publish posts, so WordPress keeps each post for review. Connect with an Administrator or Editor account. |
To stop sending articles, turn the switch off and press Turn off. Your WordPress settings are kept for later.
